Norman May, Australian sports broadcaster, Died at 88

Norman “Nugget” Alfred Vale May was born on February !4, 1928, and died on September 11, 2016.

He was an Australian radio and television sports broadcaster.

He was famous in Australia for calling “GOLD, GOLD for Australia, GOLD” during the men’s 4 x 100 meters medley final in the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.

He was raised in North Curl Curl in northern Sydney and was considered talented at cricket, rugby league and surfing.

May attended Sydney Boys’ High School.

In his youth, May was given the nickname “Nugget” due to his stocky body type. He continued to be known by the nickname throughout his life.

After his education, he gained employment as a clerk at an insurance company, whilst continuing to play cricket.

During 1957 May was invited by his friend and ABC sports broadcaster Dick Healey to join him as a commentator of a surf-lifesaving event.

The next year he was employed by the ABC as a trainee broadcaster, where he remained as a full-time employee until 1984.

May’s career in sports broadcasting continued following his official retirement from the ABC in 1984.

He received a Medal of the Order of Australia in 1983 and an Australian Sports Medal in 2000.

Norman May passed away at 88 years old.
