Dead. Broadway actor Kyle Jean-Baptiste died on August 28, 2015 Friday night after falling from a fire escape at his mother’s house.

The theater company where the 21-year-old Jean-Baptiste appeared in Les Miserables confirmed his death in a statement.

“The entire Les Miserables family is shocked and devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of Kyle, a remarkable young talent and tremendous person who made magic – and history – in his Broadway debut,” the company said.

“We send our deepest condolences to his family and ask that you respect their privacy in this unimaginably difficult time.”

Jean-Baptiste, who performed as an understudy for Jean Valjean and regularly played Constable and Courfeyrac, made history this month when he became the first black actor to play Jean Valjean on Broadway.

He was also the youngest star to do so.
