Jean Wishart, New Zealand journalist, Died at 96

Jean Boughton Wishart died on November 16, 2016.

She was a New Zealand journalist.

Wishart was editor of the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly from 1952 to 1985.

She had joined the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly as an office girl when she left school.

Eventually Jean rose to become the magazine’s editor in 1952.

Wishart spent 33-year in her career as editor—the longest in the magazine’s history—circulation increased from about 100,000 to a peak of 250,000 in the early 1980s.

She was also the director of NZ News Ltd from 1975, and was a member of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce.

During the 1985 Queen’s Birthday Honours Wishart was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to journalism.

She never got married.

Jean died in Auckland.

Jean Wishart passed away at 96 years old.
