Karl Lehmann was born on May 16, 1936, and died on March 11, 2018.

He was a Cardinal prelate of the Catholic Church.

Karl Lehmann was Bishop of Mainz, Chairman of the Conference of the German Bishops, the highest representative post of the Catholic Church in Germany, and Professor of theology at the University of Mainz and the University of Freiburg.

Karl Lehmann was the co-editor of the international journal Communio since 1971.

Lehmann was a member of the board of the Synod of the Dioceses of the Federal Republic of Germany 1971-1975, as well as a member of the International Theological Commission 1974-1984.

During September 2017, he suffered a stroke and cerebral hemorrhage which left him in need of care, first at the hospital and later at home.

He died on 11 March 2018 at 81 years old.
