He worked for nature and biodiversity across the globe. Branch hailed from Oregon.

He has been photographing for over 40 years and has been published by Time, LIFE, New York Times Magazine, Discover, and many more.

He has also won the 2006 Ansel Adams Award from the Sierra Club and the Outstanding Nature Photographer citation from the North American Nature Photography Association.

Gary died during a snorkelling session at the Great Barrier Reef on March 7, 2016.
