Marvin Dawson Mathis was born on November 30, 1940, in Nashville, Georgia and died on April 17, 2017.

Mathis was an unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the United States Senate in 1980.
During 1982 he tried to reclaim his old seat in the house but lost to successor Charles Hatcher in the Democratic primary.
Mathis became a private advocate. He was a resident of Nashville, Georgia.
He died in Tifton, Georgia.
