Adhil Bakeer Markar was born on March 11, 1990, and died on October 12, 2016.
He was a member of the Sri Lankan Bakeer Markar family.
He was the Director of the Board of Managment of the National Youth Services Council of the Ministry Economic Affairs and Policy Planning.
Born in Colombo to a prominent political family, his father was Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, former Cabinet Minister and longstanding Member of Parliament and his mother Fareeda Bakeer Markar.
His grandfather was M. A. Bakeer Markar, a former Parliamentary Speaker and a former Governor of the Southern Province.
The family hailed from the coastal town of Beruwala.
An active member in the community in efforts of youth empowerment, Adhil was the President of the Rotaract Club of Colombo North.
He was the founding Secretary General of the Model United Nations of Sri Lanka in 2011 and attended the 68th United Nations General Assembly as a Sri Lankan Youth Delegate representing the National Youth Services Council, delivering the national statement on behalf of youth in the island.
In 2014, he worked in the Attorney General’s Department and in 2015, he was appointed as Director of the Board of Managment of the National Youth Services Council which comes under the preview of the Ministry Economic Affairs and Policy Planning.
On 12 October 2016, Adhil was found dead in his dorm room.
He was 26 years old.
An inquest into the circumstances was carried out the following day and Scotland Yard ruled no suspicion in his death.
His body was repatriated to Sri Lanka and final rights taking place on October 16, 2016 at the Jawatte general cemetery.
