Zygmunt Bauman was born on November 19, 1925 and died on January 9, 2017.

He was a Polish military officer, sociologist, and philosopher.

Bauman resided in England from 1971.

Following the World War II Bauman became one of the Polish Army’s youngest majors.

Bauman was driven out of Poland by a political purge in 1968 engineered by the Communist government of the Polish People’s Republic.

Bauman became Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds, later Emeritus.

He was one of the world’s most eminent social theorists writing on issues as diverse as modernity and the Holocaust, postmodern consumerism and liquid modernity.

He was married to writer Janina Lewinson.
