Wolfhart Zimmermann, German physicist, Died at 88

Wolfhart Zimmermann was born on February 17, 1928, in Freiburg im Breisgau, and died on September 18, 2016.

He was a German theoretical physicist.

He attained a doctorate in 1950 at Freiburg im Breisgau in topology (“Eine Kohomologietheorie topologischer Räume”).

During the 1950s Zimmermann was at Göttingen one of the pioneers of the mathematical quantum field theory; along with Kurt Symanzik and Harry Lehmann he developed the LSZ theory.

Wolfhart was a professor at the New York University, from 1962 to 1974.

Zimmermann was a director at the Max Planck Institute for physics in Munich, from 1974 to 1996, where he is “Director Emeritus”.

During 1991 he received the Max Planck medal.

Wolfhart Zimmermann passed away at 88 years old.
