Whitey Campbell, American college baseball coach, Died at 89

Whitey Campbell was born on January 19, 1927 in New York, and died on November 3, 2015.

He was an American college baseball coach.

Whitey spent his life playing sports and then coaching.

Campbell attended Caldwell high school followed by the University of Miami.

He was the first Canes basketball player to score 1,000 points in a career.

In Whitey’s baseball years, he hit .301 as a freshman, .412 in his sophomore years, .328 as a junior and .428 during his senior years.

Whitey Campbell was the assistant UM football coach at different times in his career, he also coached at the Naval Academy, Kentucky, Montana and as the New Orleans Saints’ special teams coordinator.

Whitey Campbell was once voted into UM’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1970, and was named Outstanding Athlete for the first 25 years of Hurricanes Athletics.

Whitey had nine children and his wife Donna Campbell.

Whitey Campbell passed away in Rutherfordton, North Carolina at 89 years old on November 3, 2015 due to complications related to Alzheimer’s disease.
