Wanda Hjort Heger, Norwegian resistance activist, Died at 95

Wanda Maria Heger (née Wanda Maria von der Marwitz Hjort; was born on March 9, 1921, and died on January 27, 2017.

She was a Norwegian social worker.

She was noted for her efforts to help Norwegian and other prisoners in Nazi concentration camps during World War II.

As soon as the war ended in 1945, Wanda married Bjørn Heger, a Norwegian medical student released from a prison in Berlin, at the seaman’s church in Hamburg.

Heger earned a degree in social work and pursued a career helping female inmates in Norwegian prisons.

Wanda also led the organization Kriminalomsorg i frihet (outside-prison organized care for individuals sentenced for crimes), for several years.

During 1985, both Wanda and Bjørn Heger were awarded the Order of St. Olav for their humanitarian war-time efforts.

During her later years, she continued to be active in education about the war years, serving on the board of the White Buses Foundation.

Heger had six children; among them is Anders Heger.

Wanda Hjort Heger passed away at 95 years old.
