Walter Jackson Freeman III was born on January 30, 1927, and died on April 24, 2016.

He was an American biologist, theoretical neuroscientist, and philosopher.

He conducted pioneering research in how brains generate meaning.

Walters main body of research was on the perception of rabbits using electroencephalography.

In “Societies of Brains” and in other writings, he denied the view that the brain uses representations to enable knowledge and behavior.

He was President of the International Neural Network Society in 1994, and is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.
