Victoria Ostrovsky-Cohen, Israeli jurist and judge, Died at 93

Victoria Ostrovsky-Cohen was born in 1923 in Warsaw, Poland and died on April 3, 2016.

She was an Israeli judge and deputy chief justice of the Tel Aviv District Court.

Victoria was one of the first women lawyers in the State of Israel and prior to her appointment as a judge in 1978, she served as the District Attorney of the Central District.

She had immigrated to the British mandate of Palestine in 1934.

During 1941, Cohen started her law studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and began practicing as a lawyer in 1947.

She was a member of the legal team of the Hagana and in 1948 enlisted as a military prosecutor for the Israel Defence Forces.

After she was discharged in February 1949, Victoria began working for the State Attorney.

During September 1952, Victoria was appointed as Deputy District Attorney of the Central District.

Cohen was appointed as the District Attorney, in December 1962.

She was appointed as a judge in 1978 and served until retirement age in 1993.

In the 1980s, Victoria was appointed as Deputy Chief of the Tel Aviv District Court.

And during 1994, Ostrovsky-Cohen was appointed by Minister of Justice David Libai as chairperson of the public committee dedicated to the legislation of the Public Information Law.

Victoria Ostrovsky-Cohen passed away 93 yrs old.
