Vernon Lewis Ashley was born on January 16, 1916, and died November 10, 2015.

He was an Native American leader.

Vernon Ashley was born on the banks of the Missouri River.

He graduated from Flandreau Indian School.

After which he served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II

He then received his bachelor’s degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1952.

He was the chairman of the Crow Creek Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

On July 15, 2015, the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe made Vernon Ashley chief of the tribe.

The tribe adapted their first constitution while Vernon was in office.

The construction of Lake Sharpe and the flooding of tribal lands also took place while Vernon severed in office.

He also worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and was the first coordinator of Indian Affairs for the state of South Dakota.

Vernon Ashley passed away on November 10, 2015.
