Tobias de Boer, Dutch scientist, Died at 85

Pieter Cornelis Tobias de Boer was born on May 21, 1930, and died on May 2, 2016.

He was a Dutch scientist.

Tobias was a professor at the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Cornell University.

Tobias specialized in the field of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.

Tobias de Boer studied mechanical engineering at Delft University of Technology, where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree and in 1954 his Master’s.

After completing his service in the Dutch Armed Forces for two years.

He got married in 1956 and a short time later moved to the United States where they settled in Maryland.

Tobias completed his studies and obtained his doctorate at the University of Maryland in 1962 under Jan Burgers.

He was finally an assistant professor at the University until 1964.

His family then relocated to Ithaca, New York and he was employed by Cornell University as an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Aeronautical Engineering.

During 1968, Tobias became associate professor.

During 1972 the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering was founded and two years later de Boer became a full professor there.

In 2000, he retired

Whilst he work at the University, he researched on other topics, such as Pulse tube cryocoolers, the physics of shock waves and Stirling engines.

He was elected in the late 80’s as a corresponding member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He was also an sportsman and especially fond of cycling.

At 48 yrs old, he cycled 448 miles in 24 hours, setting a national record for his age category

Joan Lieshout was his wife they had three children.

Tobias de Boer passed away at 85 yrs old.
