Thomas R. McCarthy was born in 1934, and died on July 21, 2016.

He was a thoroughbred racehorse owner and trainer from Louisville, Kentucky, best known for the 2009 Blue Grass Stakes winner and Kentucky Derby runner, General Quarters.

Thomas came from a racing family, his grandfather was a jockey in Ireland and both his father and uncle trained horses at racetracks in New England.

He has been a racehorse owner and trainer from 1960.

He was unique in the racing industry in that he does all the work of maintaining and conditioning his horses.

Thomas R. McCarthy was also a former high school teacher and school principal.

Thomas R. McCarthy passed away at 82 years old.
