The Median Wasp

The Median Wasp is a species of social wasp of the family Vespidae found throughout many places of Europe and Asia.

It builds aerial paper nests in shrubs or trees and sometimes under the eaves of buildings.

It is most common to see this wasp during May and October. It has a 3.3-month colony cycle.

Behaviours of this wasp include superior nest defence and curling which is believed to function in brood incubation.

They also have gastral vibration which is involved is larval feeding.

The Mediam wasp has a haplodiploid sex-determination system that results in a high level of relatedness within the colony.

This species is not aggressive but will sting if they or their nest is threatened.

Most foraging in the nest is done by workers once the first ones reach adulthood.

These workers forage for insects nectar and wood for the construction of the nest in temperatures as low as 7 °C (45 °F) the median wasp is known to be affected by the fungus Cordyceps sphecocephaia and the Cricket Paralysis Virus.

The Mediam Wasp was first classified by Anders Jahan Retzius in 1783 and is apart of the genus Dolichovespula.
