Tamaz V. Gamkrelidze

Tamaz (Thomas) Valerianis dze Gamkrelidze was born on October 23, 1929, in Kutaisi, Georgian SSR and died on February 10, 2021.

He was a Georgian linguist, orientalist public benefactor and Hittitologist,

He was also an Academic from 1974 and President of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (GAS), Doctor of Sciences in 1963, and a Professor since 1964.

Revaz Gamkrelidze his brother also served as an Academic, who was a famous mathematician.

In 1952, Tamaz graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Studies of the Tbilisi State University (TSU).

Since 1964, he has served as an educator of this college, and the Head of the Chair of Structural and Applied Linguistics (1966).

Gamkrelidze was a Director of the Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies (Tbilisi) between 1973 and 2006.

Gamkrelidze was the creator of numerous exceptional works in the fields of Indo-European semantics, Ancient dialects, Theoretical phonetics, Structural and Applied Linguistics and Kartvelology.

He was the main advocate of the glottalic hypothesis of Proto-Indo-European consonants.

In 1988, Tamaz Gamkrelidze received the Lenin Prize and in 1989 he received the Humboldt International Prize.

He also earned the Ivane Javakhishvili Prize of the Georgian Academy of Sciences in the year 1992.

From 1992 to 2005 Gamkrelidze was a member of the Parliament of Georgia.

Since August 1991, he has served as the Rector of the Tbilisi State University for a very short time.

Gamkrelidze has been an outstanding citizen of Tbilisi from 2000. He passed away on February 10, 2021, at 91 years old.
