Tadeusz Chmielewski, Polish film director, screenwriter and producer, Died at 89

Tadeusz Chmielewski was born on June 7, 1927, and died on December 4, 2016.

He was a Polish film director, screenwriter and film producer, most notable for being one of the pioneers of popular Polish comedy.

In World War II and until 1948, he was a soldier for the National Armed Forces and the Home Army.

He was born in Tomaszów Mazowiecki and graduated from secondary school in Szczecin.

Tadeusz graduated from the National Film School in Łódź in 1954.

He was also an activist with the Polish Filmmakers Association, he was their vice president from 1983 to 1987.

Chmielewski also served as a member of the Cinematography Committee in Poland.

With the pseudonym of his grand-daughter Sophie Miller wrote the screenplay U Pana Boga za piecem.

As of 1984 Chmielewski has been head of the Film “EYE”.

In 2005, he received the honorary citizenship from the city of Tomaszów Mazowiecki.

Chmielewski was awarded the Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis, in 2010 .

During 2011 he was awarded the “Eagle” in the Polish Film Awards.

A selection of Tadeusz Chmielewski’s films was realized together with his wife, Halina Chmielewska, also a film director and screenwriter.

His father was a policeman in Tomaszów.

In World War II, his father commanded Partisan movements.

When the war was over, his father was reportedly captured and murdered by Communist Polish authorities.

Tadeusz Chmielewski passed away at 89 years old.
