Surjit Singh Barnala was born on October 21, 1925, in Ateli, Haryana and died on January 14, 2017.
He was an Indian politician.
Barnala was in turns the Chief Minister of Punjab, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands and a Union Minister.
Surjit’s father was a magistrate, Barnala passed Law from Lucknow University in 1946.
In Lucknow, Barnala was involved in the Quit India Movement of 1942.
But, instead, Barnala practiced law for some years, and became politically active in the late ’60s, rising through the ranks of Akali Dal.
However, he first stood for election in 1952 but lost by a meager 4 votes.
Barnala has authored a book Story of an Escape which has been translated from English to Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu.
Surjit’s second book that was released in December 2007 is titled My Other Two Daughters and has been transliterated in braille by Kunwar Singh Negi.
He was married to Surjit Kaur Barnala, who is also an active politician.
The couple has 4 children and grandchildren.
