John ‘Sol’ Roper, born in September 1936 and passed away October 14, 2015.

Sol was an English professional rugby league footballer of the 1950s and ’60s, and coach of the 1960s and ’70s.

Playing at representative level for Cumberland, and at club level captained Hensingham ARLFC, Workington Town, Broughton Moor, and Whitehaven, as a Scrum-half/Halfback, i.e. number 7, and coaching at club level for Whitehaven.

Sol Roper represented Cumberland while at Workington.

Sol Roper played Scrum-half/Halfback, sustained a shoulder injury, but returned to the field, to Workington Town’s 12–21 defeat by Barrow in the 1954 to the 1955 Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 30 April 1955, and was at the age of 21 years the youngest Wembley captain in Workington Town’s 9–13 defeat by Wigan in the 1957–58 Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 10 May 1958.

Sol Roper died at age 79 in October 2015.
