Sir Gordon Howard Eliot Hodgkin was born on August 6, 1932, in Hammersmith, London and died on March 9, 2017.

He was a British painter and printmaker.

Hodgkin’s work was most often associated with abstraction.

His first solo show was in London in 1962.

Some of Hodgkin early paintings tend to be made up of hard-edged curved forms in a limited number of colors.

Sometime in the 1970s, Hodgkin’s style became more spontaneous, with vaguely recognizable shapes presented in bright colors and bold forms.

Hodgkin and Julia Lane got married in 1955, by whom he had two children.

He knew he was gay, even when he married, and later left his wife.

During 2009, The Independent reported that he had been with his partner, the music writer Antony Peattie, for 20 years.

Together they lived in a four-storey Georgian house in Bloomsbury, near the British Museum.

He died in hospital in London.

Sir Howard Hodgkin passed away at 84 years old.
