He was a Tongan-born New Zealand rugby union footballer.

He was a player for Bayonne.

Previously, Lauaki played for the New Zealand national team, the All Blacks.

Sione Lauaki’s brother, Epalahame Lauaki, is a 2nd row rugby league footballer previously playing for Hull in the Super League competition.

His death was possibly due to heart and kidney problems
