Sid Applebaum, American businessman, Died at 92

Sid Applebaum was born on February 28, 1924 and died on August 6, 2016.

He was an American business man.

Himself and D.B Reinhart founded Rainbow Foods in 1983.

Which is a supermarket chain with four locations in Minnesota.

That company grew to become the second-largest grocery chain in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area.

The supermarket chain was sold to Texas wholesaler Fleming Foods in 1994 and then in 2003 to Milwaukee-based Roundy’s.

However, the stores join nine other Rainbow supermarkets that were shut down in July, after Rainbow’s owner Roundys left the Twin Cities market.

Following the closures the brand will only have four remaining stores The two Rainbow Foods stores on Lake Street and on Roberts Street were said to close by November 9th 2014.

When the closures took place there are now only 4 Rainbow stores left.

His parents were Oscar and Bertha Applebaum.

Sid’s father owned a corner grocery stand in downtown St. Paul where Sidney spent his childhood bundling soap and bagging rice.

As of the 1970’s, Applebaum’s Food Markets, which Sidney operated with his brothers and brothers-in-law, grew to over 30 stores in Minnesota.

His long professional contributions in the grocery industry led to his being awarded “Grocer of the Century” by the Minnesota Grocers Association in 1997.

Himself and his children, Sidney started a chain of retail liquor stores in 1978, Big Top Liquors and Sid’s Discount Liquors.

When he retired from the grocery business, Sid shifted his focus to the liquor stores, allowing him to continue his love for the profession.

Recently, he was recognized as a 2014 Market Watch Leader for the success of Big Top Liquors.

Sid Applebaum was deeply committed to giving back to the community that he felt had given him, his family and businesses so much.

Lorraine Smith, in 1946 became his wife, they had 3 children.

Sid Applebaum passed away at 92 years old.
