Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin, one of America’s famous politicians and author was born on the 11th of February 1964 in Sandpoint, Idaho. At the age of three months, she moved to Alaska when her parents came to teach school in Skagway in southeast Alaska. Her father, Charles, was a science teacher and track coach. Her mother, Sally, was a school secretary.

She attended Wasilla High School, during her senior year; she was co-captain and point guard of the basketball team that won the 1982 Alaska state championship.

In 1984, Palin won the Miss Wasilla beauty pageantand then finished third in the Miss Alaska pageant where she played the flute in the talent piece of the contest. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987. She also became a television sports reporter in Anchorage.

On August 29th 1988, Palin eloped with her high school sweetheart, Todd Palin and helped run his family’s commercial fishing business after their marriage. He took leave from the company when his wife became governor to avoid a potential conflict of interest.

Throughout their marriage Palin and her husband had five children: Bristol, Willow, Piper, Track and Trig. The Palin children’s unusual names are all drawn from the Palins’ personal interests.

Track was named after Sarah Palin’s affinity for running. Bristol, Willow and Trig all bear names after locales around Alaska. Piper is named for the family’s small airplane. Sarah Palin joined the Wasilla city council in 1992, and then served as the city’s mayor from 1996-2002.

She was sworn in as Alaska’s first woman governor on the 4th of December 2006, after running a campaign based on ethics and clean government. Two years later, in a surprise selection, Arizona senator John McCain made her the Republican Party’s first female candidate for vice president.

She and McCain were defeated by the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden, but that didn’t slow Palin’s apparent ambition for the spotlight. She stayed in the public eye throughout the beginning of 2009, making high-profile trips out of Alaska.

Palin is also the past chair of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, a multistate government agency that promotes the conservation and efficient recovery of domestic oil and natural gas resources while protecting health, safety, and the environment.

She also served as chair of the National Governors Association (NGA) Natural Resources Committee, which was charged with pursuing legislation to ensure state needs are considered as federal policy is formulated in the areas of agriculture, energy, environmental protection, and natural resource management.

Palin resigned as governor effective on July 26, 2009. She has remained in the public eye by writing books, including her memoir, “Going Rogue: An American Life”, and endorsing other candidates.

She has also appeared on television as a political commentator on Fox News Channel, as well as hosting the reality television series Sarah Palin’s Alaska (2010) on the TLC network and Amazing America with Sarah Palin (2014) on Sportsman Channel.

An internationally sought speaker and conservative leader, Palin is an influential force in the national debate. Her endorsement and support from her political action committee, SarahPAC, remain the gold standard for conservative candidates every election cycle.
