Sam Hulbert, American academic, Died at 79

Samuel Foster Hulbert was born on April 12, 1936, in Adams Center, New York, and died on January 29, 2016.

He was an American scientist

He was working in Ceramics Science and Biomaterials.

He did research on bio-material in artificial knees, hips, and dental prostheses.

The scholar, served as president of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for 28 years.

Sam Hulbert gained his B.S. in Ceramic Engineering in 1958.

The he received his a Ph.D. in Ceramic Science in 1964 from Alfred University.

He joined the faculty of Clemson University in 1964, eventually becoming the Associate Dean for Engineering Research and Interdisciplinary Studies in 1970.

In 1973 he joined Tulane University as the Dean of Engineering.

While at Tulane, Hulbert helped create their biomedical engineering program.

Hulbert was President of Rose-Hulman, situated in Terre Haute, Indiana, from 1976 to 2004, also teaching bio-engineering classes.

At that time, student enrollment doubled, $90 million in new buildings were constructed, the endowment increased to $180 million, and the school became co-educational.

This campaign raised $250 million.

Rose-Hulman was ranked at the top of the U.S. News & World Report rankings of undergraduate engineering programs whose highest degree was a Bachelor’s or Master’s.
