Sally Katary, American Egyptologist, Died at 70

Sally Louise Dolan Katary was born in 1946, and died in August 2016.

She was an internationally renowned scholar in the field of Egyptology.

She specialised in the economic and social history Egypt, with a focus on the New Kingdom until the Late Period.

Katary was best known for her work on the Wilbour Papyrus and related economic documents, including Land Tenure in the Ramesside Period, and this was the focus of her doctoral research.

Katary received her doctorate from the University of Toronto in 1976 for a thesis entitled Land tenure in the Ramesside period: a reconsideration of the Wilbour papyrus and related documents.

Sally received her B.A. degree (summa cum laude) from the University of Pennsylvania, and her M.A. from the University of Toronto.

She was a founding member of the Canadian Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities, and served on their Board of Trustees for many years and as the Associate Editor of the Journal of the SSEA.

Sally Katary presented at their Annual Symposium on numerous occasions, most recently in 2012.

Katary was an Honorary Trustee of the Society and head of the Book Review Committee.

Sally Katary passed away at 70 years old.
