Florence Ruth Gilbert ONZM was born on March 26, 1917, in Greytown and died on April 11, 2016.

She was a New Zealand poet whose work has been widely published in New Zealand and Commonwealth countries.

Ruth received her educated at Hamilton High School and the Otago School of Physiotherapy.

Her work appeared first in magazines and anthologies and later in ten personal collections.

Ruth Gilbert was awarded the Jessie Mackay Memorial Award for verse three times.

Ruth Gilbert has served as President of New Zealand PEN and the New Zealand Women Writers Society.

During the 2002 Queen’s Birthday and Golden Jubilee Honours she was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to poetry.

Ruth Gilbert passed away at 99 yrs old.
