Robert-Ralph Carmichael was born in 1937, and died on July 16, 2016.

He was a Canadian artist who designed the loonie side of the Canadian one dollar coin.

He resided near the northern town of Echo Bay, Ontario in the scenic Sylvan Valley.

Recently, the town has erected a large loonie statue in honour of Mr. Carmichael along the highway.

This Statue has been named “the big loonie” in reference to the neighbouring town Sudbury’s “Big Nickel” monument.
