Ri Yong-gil was born in the 1950s and died in February 2016.

In 2013, apparently it was in his 60s when appointed to his position as a general.
During early 2016, he was reported to have been executed on the orders of Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un.
Ri Yong-gil was made a Lieutenant General in April 2002.
Ri Yong-gil was promoted to colonel general and elected an alternate member of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea in 2010.
Ri Yong-gil was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army in August 2013, following that he was promoted to general around the same time.
In 2016, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that he had lately been executed on charges of corruption and forming a political action.
Ri Yong-gil passed away in February 2016.
