  Dead Famous

Raghavan Narasimhan, born on August 31, 1937, and passed away October 3, 2015.

Raghavan was an Indian mathematician at the University of Chicago who worked on real and complex manifolds and who solved the Levi problem for complex spaces.

Prof. Emeritus Raghavan Narasimhan, known for his analytical prowess in a distinguished career of more than four decades on the UChicago mathematics faculty, died Oct. 3 at Bernard Mitchell Hospital after a brief illness.

Prof. Madhav Nori also praised Narasimhan for his analytical prowess.

“Narasimhan had a truly astounding insight in analysis,” Nori said. “He often got to the heart of any problem in this field with such speed that it dazzled onlookers.

He maintained a deep interest in many areas in mathematics and was very generous with his ideas.”

Narasimhan was a beloved and highly respected member of the Department of Mathematics for more than 40 years, noted Weinberger.

“We appreciated his unique view of the world and his exquisite and uncompromising taste in mathematics.

Much of his work was in several complex variables, but he had a deep interest in analytic number theory as well.”

Raghavan Narasimhan died at age 78 in 2015.
