Philip Coppens was born on August 24, 1930 and died on June 21, 2017.

He was a Dutch-born American chemist and crystallographer.

The Amersfoort-born Coppens received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Amsterdam in 1954 and 1960.

During 1968, following appointments at the Weizmann Institute and Brookhaven National Laboratory, Philip was appointed in the chemistry department at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Coppens was a SUNY Distinguished Professor and holder of the Henry M. Woodburn Chair of Chemistry.

Philip Coppens passed away at 86 years old.
