Peter Mathias was born on January 10, 1928, and died on March 1, 2016.

He was a British economic historian.

Peter Mathias attended Colston’s School and Bristol Grammar School where he became interested in history.

Peter applied for a scholarship at King’s College in December 1945, Cambridge; instead he won an Exhibition at Jesus College, Cambridge during Summer 1946.

Then, the college demanded that those coming up from school should have done military service before they arrived so he spent two years in the army as a conscript.

Peter was Fellow of Queens’ College, Cambridge (1955-1968), and later an Honorary Fellow from 1987 until his death in 2016.

He served as the Chichele Professor of Economic History at the University of Oxford and Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and then Master of Downing College, Cambridge (1987 to 1995).

Peter Mathias passed away at 88 yrs old.
