Nil Hilevich, Belarusian poet, Died at 84

Nil Hilevich was born on September 30, 1931, in the District of Mensk Province and died on March 29, 2016.

He was a Belarusian poet.

Nil served as a professor at the Belarusian State University, the author of more than 80 books of poetry, publications, translations, one of the founders of the Frantsishak Skaryna Belarusian Language Society.

Hilevich studied in a college in Mensk ,he graduated in 1951, he was preparing to become a teacher.

In the last year during college, he worked as a teacher in one of the schools in Mensk.

After finishing up his education at the Belarusian State University (the Faculty of Philology), and graduated in 1956.

He was working at the university(1960-1986), and later, on a professor.

Nil started to work for a newspaper Zvyazda ,in 1958.

During 1978, Hilevich became a member of the Communist Party.

During 1980, Nil became the executive secretary of the Writer’s Union of BSSR, and held that position for 9 years.

Hilevich became a chairperson of the Frantsishak Skaryna Belarusian Language Society, in 1989.

Hilevich also was the chief editor of the Society’s bulletin Наша слова (literally: Our Word).

Nil Hilevich received a People’s Poet of Belarus nomination and also received some other awards in literature, in 1991.

Hilevich passed away at 84 yrs old.
