Murray Wier, American basketball player, Died at 89

Murray Neal Wier was born on December 12, 1926, and died on April 6, 2016.

He was nicknamed “Rampaging Redhead” and “Wizard Wier”.

He was an American professional basketball player.

Murray played for the Tri-Cities Blackhawks (now the present-day Atlanta Hawks) and the Waterloo Hawks.

Wier became better known for his standout college career at the University of Iowa.

But, in 1947–48, Wier was named a consensus first-team All-American and was also the inaugural National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Major College scoring leader at 21.0 points per game.

After his professional basketball career, Murray Wier became an assistant coach at Waterloo East High School for the boys’ basketball team.

Murray Wier served as the head coach for 24 years and compiled an overall record of 374 wins versus 140 losses, which include winning the state championship in 1974.

During the mid 70’s, he was named the Iowa State Coach of the Year.

He was also the head men’s tennis coach for 10 years before retiring in 1989.

Other than his coaching job, Murray served as the high school’s athletic director for 34 years.

Murray resided in Georgetown, Texas in a retirement community called Sun City Texas.

Mr.Wier was a member of the NBA Retired Players Association.

Murray Wier passed away at 89 yrs old.
