Moreese Bickham, American convicted murderer and anti-death penalty activist, Died at 98

Moreese Bickham was born on June 6, 1917, and died on April 2, 2016.

He was an American sentenced to death in 1958 in connection with the deaths of two sheriff’s deputies on July 12, 1958.

During 1972, his sentence was converted to life without parole after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Furman v. Georgia, which invalidated death penalty convictions in certain circumstances.

And the Louisiana Department of Corrections commuted Bickham’s sentence to 75 years, in 1995

Bickham was released after 37 years of incarceration, in 1996.

During the time of his death, Moreese Bickham lived in California and was an active participant in the movement to abolish capital punishment in the United States. David Isay is the creator of StoryCorps, a national enterprise to record oral histories.
