Louis Sarno, American musicologist and author, Died at 62

Louis Sarno was born on July 3, 1954, in Newark, New Jersey and died on April 1, 2017.

He was an American musicologist and author.

Sarno spent some time amoung a Bayaka Pygmy clan during the mid-1980s in the Central African Republic, and recorded their music.

Louis Sarno’s interaction with the clan were published as Song From The Forest, which was included among the “99 books that capture the spirit of Africa” by Geoff Wisner.

Sarno then traveled to Africa to record the music of a pygmy tribe, in 1985.

Louis Sarno “combined recordings of Bayakan music with sounds of their surrounding environment into a two-CD/book package entitled Bayaka: The Extraordinary Music of the BaBenzl Pygmies (Ellipsis Arts).”

He was married to a Bayakan and has two sons.

Louis Sarno resided in the forests of Central Africa.

The documentary film Song from the Forest by German director Michael Obert tells his life´s story.

Released in 2011 was a movie based on Sarno´s life called Oka! (“Oka” is pygmy for “Listen”).

He died in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Louis Sarno passed away at 62 years old.
