Lloyd Conover, American scientist, Died at 93

Lloyd Hillyard Conover was born on June 13, 1923, and died on March 11, 2017.

He was an American chemist and the inventor of tetracycline.

His invention was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

He was the first to make an antibiotic by chemically modifying a naturally produced drug.

Conover had close to 300 patents to his name.

He began studying chemistry at Amherst College, in 1941, but his studies were interrupted by World War II.

Then, Conover joined the Navy, serving three years in the Pacific on an amphibious landing ship, ultimately rising to the rank of lieutenant junior grade.

When the war was over, Conover returned to Amherst, receiving his B.A. degree in 1947.

Conover went on to earn his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Rochester in 1950.

Lloyd died in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Lloyd Conover passed away at 93 years old.
