Smith was known for her roles as Annie Brandon in I Didn’t Know You Cared, as Bette and Aunt Belle in 2point4 Children, as Norma Speakman (“Nana”) in the BBC comedy The Royle Family, as Letitia Cropley in the BBC comedy The Vicar of Dibley and as Zillah in Lark Rise to Candleford.

During 1945, Liz married Jack Thomas, whom she met while on service in India.

The couple had two children but divorced in 1959.

She brought up her son and daughter on her own.

Smith described this as an extremely difficult period in her life, as she struggled against financial difficulties and social disapproval of her status as a divorcee.

Liz Smith passed away at 95 years old.
