Lewie Steinberg, American Hall of Fame bassist, Died at 82

Lewis “Lewie” Steinberg was born on September 13, 1933, and died on July 21, 2016.

He was an American musician.

He was best known as the original bass guitar player for soul music group Booker T. & the M.G.’s. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee.

He was in the group from 1962 to 1965.

Lewie featured on “Green Onions”, its B-side, “Behave Yourself,” and the Green Onions album.

Steinberg recorded one more album with the band, Soul Dressing in 1965. Unlike the first album, every song but one on Soul Dressing was an original.

During that time, he left the group and was replaced by Donald “Duck” Dunn.

Lewie Steinberg was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

He resided in Memphis, Tennessee.

He and members of his family were honored with a Brass Note on Beale Street’s Walk of Fame, in Memphis, on November 14, 2010.

He died in Memphis.

Lewie Steinberg passed away at 82 years old.
