Julia Elena Fortún Melgarejo was born on October 9, 1929, and died on December 5, 2016.

She was a Bolivian a historian, anthropologist, folklorist, and ethnomusicologist, pioneer in this last field in her country.

Julia was born in the city of Sucre, Bolivia but lived in La Paz since her youth.

Fortún obtained an anthropology degree in Buenos Aires, Argentina and her doctorate in history in the Universidad Central de Madrid in Spain.

Before leaving Bolivia, Fortún studied music in the Academia Eduardo Berdecio and subsequently in the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in the city of La Paz.

Julia Elena Fortún passed away at 87 years old.
