John Perreault, art critic and poet, died at 78

John Lucas Perreault, born on August 26, 1937 and died September 6, 2015, he was a poet, art curator and an art critic.

Perreault was born in Manhattan, New York to a French-Canadian father and was raised in Belmar, New Jersey, has written for the Village Voice and the Soho News.

In his criticism, Perreault has championed new art of all kinds: from Minimalism and Earth Art to realist painting; from Pattern Painting to Performance Art.

As a young poet, he began as a critic by writing short reviews for ArtNews, graduated to articles, and then as a freelancer went on to write for more publications.

He has been President of the American Section of the International Association of Art Critics.

Perreault was a Trustee of the Tiffany Foundation and maintained an art blog called Artopia.

John Perreault died at the age of 78 on September 6, 2015 in Manhattan, New York from complications of gastrointestinal surgery.
