John Montague was born on February 28, 1929, in New York, and died on December 10, 2016.

He was an Irish poet. Survived by his wife Liz.

John grew up in Tyrone.

Montague published a number of volumes of poetry, two collections of short stories and two volumes of memoir.

Montague was one of the best known Irish contemporary poets.

During 1998, Montague became the first occupant of the Ireland Chair of Poetry (essentially Ireland’s poet laureate).

He died in Nice on December 10, 2016 after complications from a recent surgery.

John Montague passed away at 87 years old.
