John Michael Hayes was born on September 6, 1940, and died on February 3, 2017.

He was a scientist emeritus at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

He was educated at Iowa State University graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1962.

John completed his postgraduate education in analytical chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he was awarded a PhD in 1966 for analysis of organic constituents of terrestrial and extraterrestrial samples using mass spectrometry supervised by Klaus Biemann.

He died at his home in Berkeley, California due pulmonary fibrosis.

John M. Hayes passed away at 76 years old.
