John Horgan, Irish hurler, Died at 66

John Horgan was born on May 25, 1950, and died on June 10, 2016.

He was an Irish hurling manager and player.

John a successful career as a left corner-back with the Cork senior team.

John Horgan developed his skills at Sullivan’s Quay CBS while simultaneously coming to prominence at underage levels with the Passage club.

He had a transfer to the Blackrock senior team allowed Horgan to win three All-Ireland medals as captain, as well as four Munster medals and five championship medals.

The Irish made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team.

John Horgan won two All-Ireland medals with the under-21 team.

Horgan made his senior debut during the 1969-70 league.

John Horgan went on to play a key role for Cork in defence during a hugely successful era, and won four All-Ireland medals, six Munster medals and three National Hurling League medals.

He was the captain of the team in two separate championship seasons.

He was a member of the Munster inter-provincial team, Horgan won two Railway Cup medals.

In his inter-county career he made 26 championship appearances.

He retired from inter-county hurling following the conclusion of the 1981 championship.

During retirement from playing Horgan became involved in team management and coaching.

John served as manager of the Blackrock, Douglas and Castlelyons senior teams at various times over a twenty-year period.

He was widely regarded as one of the greatest and most popular hurlers of his era.

During his playing days, Horgan won three All-Star awards as well as the Texaco Hurler of the Year title in 1978.

Horgan has been repeatedly voted onto teams made up of the sport’s greats, including at left corner-back on the Club Hurling Silver Jubilee Team and the Supreme All-Stars team.

H was also chosen as one of the 125 greatest hurlers of all time in a 2009 poll.

Whilst in retirement from playing Horgan has maintained a key interest in hurling.

John trained Blackrock’s senior hurling team for a season in 1982, before taking a break from the game for almost twenty years.

Horgan returned to coaching in 2002 and trained Castlelyons to a senior championship semi-final.

Later he trained the Douglas senior hurling team.

John Horgan passed away at 66 yrs old.
