John Ellenby was born on January 9, 1941, in Corbridge, in northern England and died on August 17, 2016.

He was a British businessman.

John was the founder of Grid Systems Corporation, maker of the Grid Compass, the first commercially successful laptop computer.

Ellenby also co-founded GeoVector, an early augmented reality company.

Ellenby attended University College London.

John Ellenby encountered mainframe computers for the first time in the early 1960s, when he spent a year at the London School of Economics.

John Ellenby worked for the British firm Ferranti and later for Xerox, where he became involved in the management of the development of the Alto II desktop computer.

John Ellenby passed away at 75 years old.
