John Edward “Jack” Brooks, Baron Brooks of Tremorfa DL was born on April 12, 1927, and died in March 2016.

He was a Welsh politician and boxing functionary.

His parents were Edward George Brooks and Rachel White,

John was educated at Coleg Harlech.

John Brooks was Secretary of the Labour of the Cardiff South-East constituency, from 1966 to 1984.

During February 1974 and October 1974 general elections, he contested Barry for Labour.

He was an elected Cardiff councillor for the Splott ward.

Baron Brooks of Tremorfa became the leader of South Glamorgan County Council (SGCC), known for his “strong leadership style” and his effective control of the Labour Party group during the 1980s.

Nonetheless, Jack Brooks was widely seen as being enormously influential on the future leader of SGCC and Cardiff Council, Russell Goodway.

On 17 July 1979, John Brooks became a life peer as Baron Brooks of Tremorfa, of Tremorfa in the County of Glamorgan.

He served many years as the acting agent to the former Prime Minister Jim Callaghan.

John Brooks has further received an Honorary Fellowship of the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC).

Whilst he was the Deputy Chairman of the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation (and representative for the Council), he was instrumental in the redevelopment of the Docks area of Cardiff now known as Cardiff Bay.

Also, he served as the vice-chairman of the British Boxing Board of Control between 1999 and 2000, he was its steward since 1986 and its president since 2004.

John Brooks was further chairman of the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame since 1988, and chairman of Sportsmatch Wales since 1992.

John was made a Deputy Lieutenant of South Glamorgan, in 1994.

John Brooks passed away at 88 yrs old.
