Joseph Medicine Crow-High Bird was born on October 27, 1913, and died on April 3, 2016.

He was affectionately known as CrowJoe to his friends.

He was a historian and author of the Crow Nation of Native Americans.

Crow writings on Native American history and reservation culture are considered seminal works, but he is best known for his writings and lectures concerning the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

For his long career, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Bronze Star Medal and the Légion d’honneur.

During World War II, Joe Medicine Crow became the last war chief of the Crow Tribe, and was the last living Plains Indian war chief.

Joe was a founding member of the Traditional Circle of Indian Elders & Youth.

In 2009, he met Barack Obama.

Joe Medicin passed away at 102 yrs old.
