Joseph Henry Garagiola, Sr. was born on February 12, 1926, and died on March 23, 2016.

He was an American professional baseball catcher.

Then later, he became an announcer and television host, popular for his colorful personality.

Garagiola played for nine seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and the New York Giants.

Joe was also well known outside of baseball for having been one of the regular panelists on The Today Show for many years, and for his numerous appearances on game shows, both as a host and panelist.

Garagiola was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1970. He was presented with a Peabody Award in 1973 for his NBC work.

He was honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame with the Ford C. Frick Award for outstanding broadcasting accomplishments, in 1991.

Joe Garagiola, Sr was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 2004.

Joseph has also been given his own star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.

And, the St. Louis Wrestling Hall of Fame inducted him for his Wrestling at the Chase broadcasts, in 2008.
