James Martin Hayes was born on May 27, 1924, in Halifax, Nova Scotia and died on August 2, 2016.

He was a Canadian Prelate of the Roman Catholic Church.

James was ordained a priest on June 15, 1947.

Hayes was appointed the auxiliary bishop to the Archdiocese of Halifax, as well as a titular bishop of Reperi, on February 5, 1965, and consecrated on April 20, 1965.

He took part at the Second Vatican Council.

Then Pope Paul VI appointed him archbishop of the Archdiocese of Halifax on June 22, 1967.

Hayes was known as a leader in liturgical renewal.

James Martin Hayes resigned on November 6, 1990.

He died in a hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

James Martin Hayes passed away at 92 years old.
